Location
Our location
Our location is one of the contributing factors that make our school so unique. We carefully selected this area as the best location in Wales because of its regular wind conditions coming in off the sea.

Being situated in the gulf air stream we are in one of the best areas in the UK for the type of flying conditions needed for this sport.

Our base

Cilolwg Farm is a 10 minute drive from Aberystwyth centre and 2 minute drive from the beach in Borth. It is from here we conduct the classroom and theory side of things before heading out to the hills to fly.
In the summer months at the end of the flying day we can often find ourselves on the beach having a barbeque and a swim chatting about what a great day out had by all.

Borth

Borths main attraction to visitors is its wonderful long beach of golden sand and shingle, which stretches for over three miles north to south.

At the northern end of this superb beach is the impressive sand dune system of the Ynyslas National Nature Reserve, also known as the Dyfi National Nature Reserve, which juts out halfway across the mouth of the Dovey Estuary, enclosing a sheltered, boat-users haven, or even heaven, behind it.
Borths award-winning beach is the longest in Ceredigion and has a particularly shallow gradient, making it especially popular with families with younger children and sailboard enthusiasts. The tide goes out a long way, so its shallow waters are great for the little ones to paddle in and splash about.
At the southern end of this wonderful beach, an ancient submerged forest is exposed by the ebbing tide.
All of this coast-line is part of the Ceredigion Heritage Coast.
Halfway between Borth and Aberystwyth is Sarn Cynfelin, a prominent sand-bank stretching for miles out to sea, at right-angles to the coast.
There are several of these "sarnau" in this part of Cardigan Bay, signifying the shallowness of the water, and submerged coastal land.
Just south of Sarn Cynfelin is the popular little sea-side resort of Clarach Bay, which has large caravan sites and is great for camping holidays.

The flying
Our flight training is carried out in the Cambrian Mountains just a short 15 minute drive from Aberystwyth Centre and our base in Borth.

We have several usable sites situated within a close proximity so we only have a short walk should conditions change.

We will occasionally use the Preseli Mountains near Cardigan and the ridges and hills near Builth Wells as alternatives sites if needed.

Aberystwyth town

Aberystwyth town is the home to the University of Wales and the National Library. It is nestled between three hills and two beaches, and hosts some castle ruins, a pier and a harbor. It is a University town with some seven thousand students, ensuring it is vibrant throughout the year and not just during summertime.

The seafront

The seafront hosts Victorian / Edwardian buildings mostly 4/5 stories high. The wide promenade protects the buildings from the ravages of the Irish Sea and offers space to sit, soak up the sun and view the surrounding hills and mountains. On a clear day you may see the tallest mountain in Wales, Snowdon.

The harbor

The harbor was once one of the busiest in Wales and is fed by the rivers Ystwyth and Rheidol (which incidentally, is the steepest river in Britain). Aberystwyth is now the centre of local rural life and is visited by many to sample the numerous cafés, bars, and restaurants including, Chinese, Indian, Italian and Mediterranean cuisine.

The Railway

The Aberystwyth Electric Cliff Railway is the longest electric cliff railway in Britain. It climbs Constitution Hill another one of our flying sites from the northern end of the towns promenade with trains running every few minutes during the spring, summer and early autumn.

Reaching the summit reveals an amazing panorama which on a clear day extends as far as the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire to the south, while the whole expanse of Cardigan Bay opens out to the west and the mountains of Snowdonia to the North can also be seen.

The Cambrian Mountains

The Cambrian Mountains around Aberystwyth supply a stunning back drop and are where most of our training is conducted, There are big green grassy slopes which are perfect to train on and they give great Panoramic Sea views which can be seen for miles. As we are in the high hills we are often flying with the red Kites

The red kite has a wing span of between 1.5 and 1.7 metres long and can weigh between 800 & 1300 grams. The wind span size makes it easy for the bird to soar and it has around a 60:1 glide angle thats up tp 10 times more than a beginners paraglider.

The local weather

The local weather is dominated by the sea and the Gulf Stream which warms the whole region and makes for pleasurable visiting.
